Do you want to know how to achieve fame and respect in no time? Apply these five no-fail marketing tips for motivational speakers, and see the difference.
1. Join organizations for public speakers.
These organizations have a lot to offer, especially for novice motivational speakers who are just starting to build their contact lists. You can gain important contact information of event organizers, producers, publishers and editors, marketing experts, and other speakers who can help you get a jump start for your career. Some professional organizations also give out (sometimes sell) marketing leads from past events, which you can use for your own marketing strategies, such as email marketing.
From the audience’s point of view, motivational speakers who belong to a professional organization are more credible and serious about their profession. Try American Speaker Bureau, Professional Speakers Guild, and National Speakers Association. You can also join Toastmasters International, not as a member, but as a possible resource speaker or adviser.
2. Tap other media.
Traditionally, tapping other media is a way for speakers to make more money by receiving additional professional fees and selling other merchandize. Nowadays though, it is seen as a showcase of expertise and measurement of popularity.
Writing a book can grow your fan base by 10-folds because authorship is considered another expertise of its own. In fact, all the most successful motivational speakers in history have had their own share of bestsellers.Nevertheless, it may not be easy to get a publisher without building your reputation as a speaker first.
As an alternative, you can self-publish or sell eBooks, although it is generally considered less credible. It may be received more positively if you’ll sell eBooks, along with other merchandizes, through your own website. Marketing your website to improve traffic is another matter though.
When given the chance, contribute to websites, blogs, and print media to increase exposure and earn new audiences. The reach of newsletters should never be underestimated as well. Also, don’t forget to post your videos on YouTube, MySpace, and other similar video-sharing sites for viral marketing.
3. Improve social media presence.
Aside from the bigger audience and their potential for viral marketing, social media give the chance to present yourself as someone approachable and friendly. By making yourself relevant as well, you can tap a younger audienceto fill in the continuously graying audience. Your goal here is to build rapport and research about their needs and demands as well.
4. Make a podcast and conduct a webinar.
You can widen your reach by giving your followers the chance to watch and listen to you without having to attend your events. You won’t lose money with it because you can still earn from podcast sales and webinar registrations (although podcasts are now usually given as supplemental materials for other sold products or services).
Podcast is basically the audio version of your eBook or the recorded version of your speech. Webinar, on the other hand, is you delivering a speech online. These two can become lucrative sources of income, especially webinar, which is increasingly gaining popularity due to its convenience. Your written materials can also be put into good use here.
Nevertheless, you need to hire your own team of technical and marketing experts if you want to push through a career in webinars (which can even be your own main source of income).
5. Prepare a media kit.
A media kit is an “information package” that you can distribute to media outlets and other personalities interested in knowing what you do and what you can offer. You can also send this to editors and bloggers when trying to get publicity or a contribution published.
This is composed of a biography, resume, FAQs of your career, press release, contact information, and if available, sample speech or excerpt of published work. Some motivational speakers put it in their websites as a downloadable file for everyone who is interested. Either way, it makes writing about you easier.
